The new man in charge of the SA Air Force’s (SAAF) military aviation history via its three museums is Lieutenant Colonel Thor Fredericks. He replaces Lieutenant Colonel Mike O’Connor, who has been Officer Commanding the SAAF Museum for the last four years.
Fredericks arrived at AFB Zwartkop from his previous posting at AFB Ysterplaat this week to take over command.
A retired SAAF general expressed satisfaction with Fredericks’ appointment and said he is a “dynamic person who gets on with things”.
The new museum boss has, according to a defenceWeb source, a logistics background which should stand him in good stead when it comes to the museum’s annual air show, its annual major fundraiser.
This year’s air show will take place on May 7 and again has the Paramount Group as it major partner. The event will celebrate aviation through the ages under the theme “Wings over Zwartkop”.
He did not have an indication of where O’Connor would be posted and SAAF headquarters has not issued any transfer bulletins.
Following the retirement of long-time curator Chris Teale from the AFB Ysterplaat branch of the SAAF Museum, Lieutenant Colonel Hans Zimmer has been acting curator and, although nothing has yet been finalised, indications are he will be asked to stay on as a Reserve Force member when he reaches retirement age in 12 months.
