SAAF helicopter comes under fire in DRC
JOHANNESBURG - A South African Air Force helicopter has been damaged by unidentified gunfire in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the SANDF said on Saturday.
“The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) confirms that on Friday 11 March 2016 a South African Air Force (SAAF) Oryx helicopter came under unprovoked gunfire from an unidentified ground attacker(s) while conducting routine aerial patrols in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC),” Brigadier-General Xolani Mabanga said.
None of the crew or members onboard were injured.
The helicopter suffered minor structural damage after being hit by a small firearm projectile. It was able to continue its flight and landed safely at the SANDF base in Goma in the DRC.
A board of inquiry will be convened to determine the extent of the damage done to the helicopter, Mabanga said.
