SANDF briefing highlights capability gaps
The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) commitment to the African Capability for Immediate Response to Crises (ACIRC) has been detailed in a 11 March parliamentary briefing document that has entered the public domain.
The ACIRC is envisaged as an interim African intervention force that will stabilise a situation for 90 days, after which an African Union or UN force would be deployed.
South Africa is the ACIRC's 'framework nation' until the end of June, meaning it is obliged to deploy its contingent within seven days of authorisation. This would then be followed by a force provided by Uganda and Tanzania within another seven days.
