Defence ministry on a recruitment drive at tertiary insitutions
Defence ministry is on a recruitment drive for the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). She is worried about its ageing force and declining capability. On Wednesday, students at the Walter Sisulu University were encouraged to take up careers in the army. Soldiers in military regalia and heavy arms were on display - all to attract skilled recruits to its ranks. "Our defence review talks to the rejuvenation of the SANDF, [and] arresting the decline of our capabilities. One of the ways to deal with that is to recruit engineers, and technicians, who can specialise in those areas," adds Mapisa-Nqakula. Officials will target institutions of higher learning, especially those in rural areas to entice students. Bursaries will be offered to deserving students. UWC Students' Representative Council president Thulani Landu says, "We wanted the students to know that there are other careers they can pursue within the SANDF ... and we wanted the minster to outline [those possible careers] herself," explains the minister. Student Sive Vuwana says, "There are many careers within the force especially those of us interested in joining the defence force." The career exhibition has made an impression. It's a first step towards recruiting for the aging army.
