At least 10 people have been killed and over 30 others injured in a South African National Defence Force bus crash in the Free State on Friday.
Speaking to TMG Digital‚ ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak said that the incident took place at the Golden Gate Reserve on the R716.
"At this stage we know that it is an SANDF bus. The bus rolled down an embankment and we know that at least 10 people have been killed‚” he said.
Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said the accident happened at about 11.50am
"Paramedics arrived at the scene and found that a bus with 42 people had rolled.
"After triaging the injured‚ it was found that nine people had tragically died at the scene while the others sustained injuries ranging from critical to serious‚" Botha said.
The injured were treated at the scene by various services before they were transported to hospital.
“Tragically another person died soon after arriving at the hospital‚ bringing the death toll to ten‚” said Botha.
Rob Byrne tweeted a picture of the bus‚ its windscreen windows smashed‚ saying‚ “Free State - R712 Route‚ #BusCrash (Update) 10 people killed in a SANDF bus crash at Golden Gate‚ via @SiphoTowa.”
In a separate incident Wednesday‚ 35 people were injured when two buses collided on the N8 approximately about 30 kilometres outside of Bloemfontein.
