South African soldiers from all four arms of service deployed on continental peace support missions and locally will this week be thanked for their services when the SA National Defence Force’s (SANDF) Goodwill Project starts delivering.
Parcels were today being loaded at AFB Waterkloof ahead of a flight that will take senior SANDF officers and representatives of the major Project Goodwill sponsors to Goma and Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Around 800 South African airmen, medics, sailors and soldiers on duty in the central African country will be receiving gifts made possible by donations from, among others, Sanlam.
Lungisa Mbuli, Executive Head: Group Business Development of Sanlam, told defenceWeb his company’s involvement was one way of saying thank you to the country’s men and women in uniform.
“We have been part of the SANDF Goodwill Project for a number of years,” he said, adding there was a need for stability not only in South Africa but also in Africa.
“This is what our men and women in uniform are contributing to and Sanlam being part of the Goodwill Project is a vehicle that says ‘thank you’.”
While the men and women currently doing duty in the DRC as well as those deployed internally on border protection will no doubt welcome the gift and the thoughts it carries, they will probably be more grateful for the other component of the Goodwill Project.
This is a food hamper delivered to the door of each and every SANDF member who will not be home this festive season.
Lieutenant Colonel Piet Paxton, Staff Officer, Operational Communications of the SANDF Joint Operations Division, said distribution of the hampers was already underway.
“It takes time because hampers are hand delivered to the homes of servicemen and women and mistakes cannot be made. We want to ensure the families of those not home for the holiday season have their share of Christmas cheer.”
Some two thousand seven hundred hampers will be delivered.
Indications from the Ministry are that Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula will be in the DRC early next week to wish the troops well over the holidays and thank them for their contributions.
