A team from the German Bundeswehr participated in the annual CSANDF Military Skills Competition (Milcomp) held near Potchefstroom last year. The competition is a joint venture between the South African Reserve Force Council (RFC), Chief of the South African National Defence Force and Chief Defence Reserves. This competition is an excellent example of a successful joint venture between different role-players to ensure a professional and measurable outcome.
Articles in the journals Bundeswehr Sport-Magazin and .loyal – das Magazin für Sicherheitspolitik, illustrated with many photographs, described the German participation in glowing terms. The competition and the South African hosts were praised by our German friends for the professionalism and efficiency shown during the competition.
The German Reservists won the trophy for the best team participating in the competition. Other nations that sent reservists to take part were Botswana, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Norway. And of course, the hosts, South Africa.
Admitting that the conditions and the course presented by the South Africans were tough, the Germans clearly enjoyed their experience.
In their words, “We experienced a really great competition here. Everything was well organized, with great care. Despite the very different climatic conditions, we were able to achieve these outstanding successes. The support provided by the Armed Forces Office, the Military Attaché Staff in Pretoria and the South African organizers all contributed significantly to this success.”
According to the German organiser, Ulrich Konstantin, the feedback on these articles was so good that since their publication they have recruited 13 new applicants for their Milcomp team. This is indeed a feather in the cap of the Reserve Force Council and the SANDF.
